How to set up your account for screen reader access
Accessibility Mode is an option that can be turned on in Ebook Central by using a screen reader such as JAWS or VoiceOver; or via the webpage options.
Turning on Accessibility mode via the webpage options
To switch on accessiblity mode go to Settings in the main menu in the top right then select Profile.
Select ‘Enable Accessibility Mode’ so pages of books are set as machine readable text with images and links labeled with text alternatives for screen reader use.
Once turned on, the screen reader can then be used to read the text on the screen and control navigation.
Screen Reader Access
When a user accesses Ebook Central using a screen reader, their screen reader will read out instructions for turning on accessibility mode.
Once enabled, books in the online reader will be provided in a text-only format that can be read by the screen reader.
Since accessibility mode is tied to a particular Ebook Central patron account, the user must be signed in to an account in order to turn it on and to access books in the text-only mode.
Once accessibility mode is enabled, your screen reader will read out instructions on toggling the mode off in case you ever need to disable it.
If you are a librarian who would like to see a demonstration of how accessibility works but do not have access to a screen reader to test on behalf of a patron, you can view ProQuest’s demonstration video.
Accessibility mode can also be enabled by ProQuest’s Ebook Technical Support team. Please contact firstname.lastname@example.org to request accessibility mode if you cannot enable it directly using your screen reader.
